Grown in the USA. crafted in the USA.
We support alpaca and wool producers across America (many who have just a few animals).
Each pair of socks is crafted on state-of-the-art equipment with fiber initially milled at our sister company, Yarn Factory. From raw fiber to finished sock, our team is hands-on at every step. Put simply, this lets us make a better sock for you!
We are committed to helping revive America’s cottage fiber industry.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the first edition alpaca sock being released?
The first edition alpaca sock is the culmination of years of research, development, testing, and experimentation.
The first edition sock will be available around November. We anticipate having three styles available (crew, ankle, and boot) in several sizes.
What is the material content of Far north socks?
We aim to produce the highest quality sock using Grown in the USA natural fibers without fillers like acrylic.
The material content of our socks varies by the style, but generally contains at least 65% natural fiber sourced from farms around the USA. Specialty sock runs may contain up to 98% natural fiber for a truly unparalleled and unique sock experience.
Our first edition sock is made using Grown in the USA alpaca fiber sourced from North Dakota and Colorado. We will also be releasing a line of Grown in the USA wool socks this fall.
What is the expected Retail price?
Our team is working to ensure that producers earn a fair value for the fiber that they raise. We believe in supporting the producers who take a risk on raising high-quality fiber right here in the USA. We started as alpaca farmers over a decade ago and know firsthand the care, love, and dedication that it takes to make great fiber.
That said, we aren’t the least expensive alpaca or wool sock. We don’t want to be the cheapest. Our goal is to support America’s small fiber producers while creating high-quality products.
We anticipate a retail price of between $20-$35 per pair depending on the sock style and material type.
Where are your socks made?
Far North Socks are made in Colfax, North Dakota and is co-located with our sister company, Yarn Factory.
Fiber is processed 100% start-to-finish at our facility in Colfax, North Dakota – just 30 minutes south of Fargo.
Do you offer custom sock production?
Yes!
Our minimum sock batch size is just 10lbs. We can make socks from alpaca, wool, and nearly any other natural animal fiber. We also offer US-sourced blending fibers, allowing us to make the sock to your specifications.
The Far North Sock Company team handles the entire process from raw fleece to finished sock. String is milled onsite at Yarn Factory to ensure consistency and quality. There’s no manufacturing logistics for you to coordinate, plus we provide updates at every step of the production process.
Custom sock production will vary in cost depending on the complexity of sock design. Our aim is to provide a price competitive option for producers who wish to carry products made directly from their own fiber. Depending on the style of sock, prices will range from $4-10/pair plus initial fiber processing costs.
For more info on custom sock production, please fill out the interest form. Please note that at this time, we are unable to accept yarn made by other mills for use in sock production.
Who Owns Far North Sock Company?
Far North Sock Company is owned by Dirk & Jessie Monson and Drew Monson & Wendy Thill.
Jessie and Dirk also own Yarn Factory (an artisan fiber mill) and Ten Seven Acres (an alpaca farm). Wendy is a veterinarian and Drew is a logistics manager.
Can I buy socks wholesale for my farm store?
Yes! Please fill out the form to get updates as we launch our wholesale program this fall. Our Grown in the USA/Made in the USA socks will be price competitive with socks made with imported fibers.
What Equipment Do You Use?
Fiber is initially milled on semi-worsted equipment at Yarn Factory, which is co-located with Far North Sock Company. Socks are knitted on 144 needle jacquard sock machines capable of multiple styles and sizes.
Do you buy alpaca fiber or wool?
We will be buying fiber in the future. At this time, we have sourced enough Grown in the USA fiber for our first edition alpaca socks.
We will also offer fiber buying opportunities for producers who wish to have their fiber included in our master batches. This is especially useful if your local markets require a producer have a hand in the products that they sell, but may not have enough for a custom sock order. This option will be available for producers who have as little as 3 lbs of fiber to contribute!
Be the first to know
As of July 2024, our team is busy milling our first edition sock using alpaca fiber sourced from North Dakota and Colorado alpaca farms. We anticipate socks will be available for purchase (wholesale and retail) beginning in November 2024.
We are also now accepting reservations for custom sock processing with an anticipated early 2025 delivery. With batch sizes as small as 10lbs, this is a great option for fiber producers who want a sock made 100% from their own fiber.
We encourage you to sign up to receive updates as we get closer to launch.
